Bolton reportedly writes Trump asked him to help pressure Ukraine in May meeting with Cipollone
Former National Security Adviser John Bolton has even more bombshells to offer in his upcoming book. Not long before President Trump's Senate impeachment trial was set to resume Friday, The New York Times reported that in Bolton's book, he alleges Trump in May 2019 directed him to help with a Ukraine pressure campaign. This would have been two months before Trump's infamous phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which he pushed for investigations into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son. Bolton reportedly writes that during an Oval Office meeting also attended by Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, and White House counsel Pat Cipollone, Trump told him "to call Volodymyr Zelensky, who had recently won election as president of Ukraine, to ensure Mr. Zelensky would meet with Mr. Giuliani, who was planning a trip to Ukraine to discuss the investigations that the president sought." Bolton writes he did not end up making the call. The…
John Delaney drops out of the 2020 race
The first Democrat to enter the 2020 race is getting out. Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney announced Friday he's ending his campaign for president, saying he's doing so as not to hurt other moderate candidates in Iowa. "It's clear to me on Monday, on caucus night, I will not have sufficient support to get to the 15 percent viability threshold ... but my support is sufficient enough to take from other, more moderate candidates, and I just don't want to do that," Delaney told CNN's New Day. Delaney, who The Washington Post notes became the first Democrat to enter the 2020 race by announcing his candidacy all the way back in 2017, went on to urge Democrats to nominate a candidate "who's running in the center." Asked on CNN Friday who his supporters should caucus for, Delaney named three while noting he's not endorsing anyone: former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Notably, Delaney didn't name Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) or Elizabeth…
Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel find creative ways to hear John Bolton's testimony
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is confident he has the votes to block any witnesses from testifying in President Trump's impeachment trial, "but here's the thing: 75 percent of Americans support calling witnesses in this trial," Stephen Colbert said on Thursday's Late Show. The would-be star witness is former National Security Adviser John Bolton, whose forthcoming book reportedly details a first-hand account of Trump saying he was withholding $400 million in Ukraine military aid to force investigations of Democratic rivals — "a shocking revelation of something we've all known for months," Colbert said. Still, if he did testify, nobody knows what Bolton would even say, Colbert noted, so he had him (or at least Dana Carvey in a fake mustache) on "via live satellite" to ask. Carvey's Bolton had a lot to say, very energetically. Yes, "Capt. Cover-up Mitch McConnell is hoping to have it all wrapped up by tomorrow," after having "done everything he can to kill this," Jimmy Kimmel said on Kimmel Live.…
